The city's territory occupies 1440 square kilometres and borders the sea and the St-Lawrence River for some 130km. French is the first language learnt by most of Gaspé's population where nearly 90% of the population isFrench Canadian.
Gaspé is whereJacques Cartiertook possession ofNew France(now part of Canada) in the name ofFrançois I of Franceon July 24, 1534.It is also a great place to visit during winter, especially for those interested in skiing/snowboarding and snowshoeing in the Chic Choc Mountains located in the remote middle of the peninsula.
