The term is often used more specifically to denote acontinentcomprisingAustraliaand proximate islandsor biogeographically as a synonym for either theAustralasian ecozone(WallaceaandAustralasia) or the Pacific ecozone (Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia, excluding bothNew ZealandandmainlandNew Guinea).
