Piedmontis one of the 20regions of Italy. It has an area of 25,402square kilometres (9,808 sq mi) and a population of about 4.6 million. The capital of Piedmont isTurin.The region contains major industrial centres, the main of which isTurin, home to theFIATautomobile works.Olivetti, once a major electronics industry whose plant was inScarmagno, nearIvrea, has now turned into a small-scale computer service company.The city ofAstiis located about 55 kilometres (34 miles) east of Turin in the plain of the Tanaro River and is one of the most important centers ofMontferrat, one of the best known Italian wine districts in the world, declared officially on 22 June 2014 a UNESCO World Heritage site.
