Mainly a suburban city, Surrey is the province's third largest city by areaand the second-largest city by population.It became incorporated in 1879, and encompasses land formerly occupied by a number of Halqemeylem-speaking aboriginal groups. Itis also one of the largest industrial centers within British Columbia, with a burgeoning high technology, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, health, education, agriculture, and arts sector.
